GWS defender Zac Cummings had a break-out game in the Giants 59-point win over the Adelaide Crows at the Adelaide Oval in round 7 of the 2022 AFL season that earned him 7 votes in the Carey Bunton medal based on based on voting by the AFL coaches.

The North Broken Hill product has finally found his niche as a medium defender after starting with the Giants in 2018. It was only his 40th game for GWS.

He had 33-disposals made up of 19 kicks and 14 handballs as well as five marks and seven tackles.

However, Swans co-captain Callum Mills still leads the Carey Bunton medal for the best NSW player in the AFL this season with 31 votes followed by Isaac Heeney (Swans) and Crows key forward “Tex” Walker (also from Broken Hill club Norths) level pegging on seventeen votes.

Meanwhile, Geelong key forward Tom Hawkins continues to lead both the Coleman (AFL) and Mohr (NSW) medals as the leading goalkicker this season. He booted two goals in the Cats’ loss to Fremantle at Kardinia Park.
