– Committee Re-elected

A reasonable turnout at Magpie Sports yesterday saw those on the committee who stood for election, re-appointed to their positions.

The include:

  • President                      –       Ian Granland
  • Vice President             –       Paul Macpherson
  • Secretary                      –        Heather White
  • Treasurer                      –        John Addison
  • Committee Persons –        Jenny Hancock, Tom Mahon, Ian Wright & Gus McKernan

A comprehensive annual report was tabled and the president moved through the document explaining its contents.  He also commended the members of the committee for their commitment and contribution over the past 12 months.  He also said that while four persons stood as Committee there was provision for the addition of an extra person with whom he had discussions with in recent weeks.

Following the meeting a Special General Meeting was held to approve the changes to the constitution.  These now bring the organisation in line with the updated requirements of the Incorporated Associations Act and the rules and guidelines set by the Department of Fair Trading.  A copy of this had been posted on this website.

After the formalities, attendees were invited to inspect the facilities in the Society’s room at Magpie Sports.  This is where a photograph was taken of some and include from left: Mark Spooner, Tom Mahon (standing),  Ian Allan (son of Bill),  Ian Granland, Bill Allan, Jim McSweeney, Ian Wright.

Tinting smallThe Society decided to dig into their war chest and have the 2.4 x 2.4m window area in their rooms at Wests, Croydon Park (Magpie Sports), tinted.

The decision was taken following the intense morning heat their rooms are subjected to from the summer sun.  Although thick curtains curtailed a reasonable amount of heat, they also restricted light into the room making work under those conditions extremely difficult at this time of the year.

Following an intense investigation, the committee resolved to have the tinting installed from a local supplier at their own cost.  Yesterday, a high grade tinting material was applied.  This stops 90% of the heat and also reflects the suns rays.  In the winter the film will serve to retain heat in the room..

The process has now allowed the removal of the heavy curtains and now provide an excellent amount of light into the working area making conditions much improved not only for activities but also better conditions for the retention of the delicate documents, photographs etc., which make up the Society’s collection.

These changes also compliment the renovations which are currently taking place at the Magpie Sports Club.

Since its takeover by the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL almost half a million dollars has been spent in refitting the ground floor of the club.  The premises were in a poor condition and the alterations have lifted the public area to a much more appealing facility and one members would be very pleased to visit.  If in Sydney, take the time to go out to the club at Croydon Park and see the changes for yourself.  Great meals are available at very reasonable prices.  These changes should be finished by Christmas.

Last week the Western Suburbs Australian Football Club Ltd was officially wound up at a meeting of members.  The Society had their representatives present who witnessed the sad passing of a club which has very much supported Australian Football in Sydney over many years.

All of the Society’s committee and a number of its members are also members of the Magpie Sports Club.
