Ralph Robertson is the most capped player in NSW football history. He represented on at least 39 occasions from 1903-14. He captained the NSW team in the 1908,11 & 14 national carnivals and was considered the very best players of his time. Ralph died in an aerial accident over Egypt in 1917 whilst a member of the Royal Australian Flying Corps. Here are a few of many complimentary comments of the man written in 1907:
'Cool, calm, and collected.'' These words can be truthfully applied to Ralph Robertson, the East Sydney champion, who led Combined Sydney to victory against Port Adelaide. Never flurried, no matter how tight the fix, Robertson has the happy faculty of always being in the right place at the right time. For headiness and Judgment he stands pre-emininent amongst Sydney players.

Born In Leicestershire, England, 24 years ago, the East Sydney crack went to Melbourne when very young. For some time he played In the Southern Districts' Competition, and for two years prior to coming to Sydney was numbered amongst the 18 of St. Kilda, the team which this season has come right to the front, having sustained only one defeat , by South Melbourne on Saturday, which put up a phenomenal feat by scoring seven goals and only two behinds— accurate kicking, to be sure. Most men when weighted with the responsibility of captaincy fail to do them-selves justice as players. Robertson, however, is a notable exception, as it does not apparently make the slightest difference to him. His sterling performance against Port Adelaide proves this. When the Wheatfielders speak of the match they played here, it is certain that the name of Ralph Robertson will be frequently men- tioned as one who was greatly instrumental in bringing about their downfall. The East Sydney champion usually acts as rover for two quarters, the remainder of the time being spent half-forward. A splendid high-mark and an accurate and long place-kick, Ralph rarely plays in a match without causing the goal umpire to hoist tho two flags. Robertson and Delany, in my opinion, Sydney's two greatest players, are very dissimilar in style, for whilst Robertson gives one the impression that there is no need to hurry, and appears to walk through his opponents, Delany is meteoric., flashing through a crowd like lightning, and getting in his kick before they have realised he is past them.

Said of Robertson in a 1905 copy of the Sydney Sportsman: " Ralph Robertson was easily the best player on the ground in the match between East Sydney and Paddington. This player plays a most consistent game Saturday after Saturday ; he never seems to tire. "
