1980 NSW Under 15 (Shell Cup) Team

UNDER 15 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Shell Cup was an interstate Australian Football Competition first played in 1961 between New South Wales and the ACT at an Under 14 age group.

The Shell Oil Company of Australia, through senior company executive, Frank Bird, a former West Australian who was coach of Sydney University and later NSW Senior Coach, donated a cup for the competition in that year which is the reason for the Shell logo.

Later Queensland joined in a round robin competition. Then Tasmania and the Northern Territory committed teams to this annual competition where the venue rotated from state to state.

The History Society has possession of this cup, together with another (duplicate) which was purchased when the original could not be found.

The competition originally was Under 14 but changed to Under 13 in 1962 back to Under 14 in 1963 then Under 15 in 1966 and then to Under 16 in 1996. The NSW team combined with the ACT in 1998.

1980 - Carnival in Canberra

After a virtual monopoly of this championship, the day had to come, due to a variety of reasons,
when we would temporarily lose the title. Congratulations to a much improved Tasmanian team.
