The Black Diamond AFL was started in 2000 with a combination of the Newcastle and Central Coast Football Leagues.
The area is just north of Sydney with the two areas joined by a modern freeway complex as well as an electric train line making distances and differences much smaller.
The number of clubs has varied and with the introduction of divisionalisation has allowed those less competitive clubs compete at their own level. It would appear that not all aspire to the top level.
The league is well structured and has been particularly well run. It has also been very competitive on the field in competition with other leagues in New South Wales.
